Memories of Glass

In Memories of Glass, Novel Giveaway

In 1942, three Dutch leaders concocted an outlandish, heroic scheme to rescue more than 600 Jewish children from deportation, right out from under the oppressive watch of their occupiers. Memories of Glass, my latest time-slip novel, captures this incredible feat through the eyes of two women—childhood friends—who partner together to rescue these children even as they try to outwit a corrupt American investor who is helping finance Hitler and his war. When the enemy finds these women, they must both make an impossible choice—and one of them must leave behind the boy she loves in order to save his life.

Almost eighty years after these women seemingly disappear, Ava Drake begins to suspect that her great-grandfather was not the World War II hero he claimed to be. Her work as director of the prestigious Kingston Family Foundation leads her to collaborate with a man named Landon West. As Landon’s great-grandmother shares the broken pieces of her story, Ava must confront the greatest loss in her own life—and powerful members of the Kingston family who will do anything to keep the truth buried.

To research Memories of Glass, I had the privilege of hearing some incredible stories from Dutch friends both here and in The Netherlands, visiting the former theater where the 600 children were rescued, and hiking through mines outside Maastricht that were used as escape tunnels during the war.

I have long been fascinated by those whose bravery in the face of the evil that was Hitler’s regime saved many. And, when it was the most defenseless children that they saved, it’s even more incredible. I look forward to reading this!

In April 2014 I was planning to go on a mission trip to Donetsk, Ukraine and went to serve in Prague instead but had ten extra days to share with my sister-in-law. I decided to take her to Amsterdam, Haarlem, Delft, the Keukenhof Gardens and Bruges, Belgium before our flight to Prague. Visits to Corrie ten Boom’s and Anne Frank’s homes were some of highlights of our trip. We climbed into the hiding place through the bottom of the cupboard and were stunned by how close Corrie, her father and sister lived to the Nazi headquarters just a short walk from their home on Barteljorisstraat. I’m really looking forward to reading Memories of Glass as I was intrigued by reading Chateau of Secrets, Catching the Wind and Hidden Among the Stars—all of which I gave 5 stars on Goodreads!

Melanie, you are a new-to-me author, but I have always been interested in WWII history, especially since my Dad was on the SS Saratoga aircraft carrier, and survived the war, to, later, after his conversion, become a long-time Christian missionary in Paraguay, South America. Thanks for the wonderful opportunity to enter this giveaway! Would love to win a print copy! God bless!

I am about to embark on writing my first book, inspired by my Dutch Grandfather’s diary of being in a German prison of war camp during WWII. He wrote to my Grandmother every day from May ’42 to May ’43 and I am building a story inspired by this diary – about what I imagined his life was like before being captured, during the three years at the camps in Stanislau and Nuremberg, and how his love for my Grandmother and his ties with fellow Dutchmen pulled him through. I would LOVE to read your book!

  • George Adams
