I'm Melanie Dobson, and I am so pleased you're here! Writing fiction is actually just an excuse for me to immerse myself in the past. I love to read old books, interview new friends, and explore fascinating places around the world. I also enjoy connecting with readers on Facebook and Instagram and via my quarterly newsletter where I share fun giveaways like this scavenger hunt. While I've written across many genres over the years, my favorite is time-slip (or dual timeline) fiction where a contemporary character is trying to solve a past mystery—which is exactly what happens in my new novel, The Lost Story of Via Belle.

Here's a little more about Via and her lost story:

When aspiring screenwriter Harper Rayne investigates the disappearance of a bestselling romance novelist, she uncovers a web of secrets entangling her family with Via Belle’s tragic past. Forty years earlier, Via’s seemingly perfect life is shattered after her first husband's death and a scandalous second marriage. As Harper begins to unravel the story behind Via’s marriage and the haunting twist in her final manuscript, she must choose between protecting her family’s secrets or exposing the lies.

The Lost Story of Via Belle is an atmospheric mystery about the legacy of sacrificial love and the redemptive power of truth. It's especially meaningful to me because the plot was inspired by Grace Livingston Hill, a novelist that I read often as a young woman. Inspirational novels like hers have had a tremendous impact on my life.

In His Steps

Another novel that impacted my life and shaped my understanding of story was written in the late 1800s by a Kansas minister named Charles Sheldon who wanted to encourage his congregation to love and care for the people in Topeka. He began writing a story to read to his congregation during their Sunday evening services, wrestling with the hard question: What would Jesus do? Every day. In every situation.

In His Steps became one of the bestselling novels in history, sparking the WWJD movement a century later as a new generation wanted to follow the way of Jesus at home, work, and school. Reverend Sheldon knew the impact and influence of story. Perhaps you do too. In His Steps changed my life. So did This Present Darkness by Frank Peretti, The Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan, and Julie by Catherine Marshall. Those redemptive stories all had and continue to have a profound impact on me and my writing.

I think Jesus told parables because stories have a way of mirroring our lives. They help us reflect on where we are and imagine where we could be. Because they often connect deeply in both heart and mind, novels can help us empathize with those whose stories are different than ours. As Reverend Sheldon masterfully demonstrated, stories are a powerful way to equip and encourage followers of Christ to continue walking in His steps.

I hope you enjoy the creative, inspirational stories of every author along this scavenger hunt! I'm glad you've joined us on the journey.

The Lord of the Rings. I rewatched it every year because there is so much you can take away from it.
Sonnetta Jones
Titanic - I was fascinated by the disaster after reading a book published just a couple of years after the tragedy and then when the movie came out it made me think about life in general.
sharon
As a new believer, Francine River’s Mark of the Lion series was profoundly impactful.
Brandi
As for a movie 'Dead Again' and a book would be 'The Assisi Underground' by Alexander Ramati
Karen Bacigalupo
As a child I watched the Movie, "A Man Called Peter"; which was meaningful to me. Peter gave his life completely to God after a brush with death. Peter Marshall was not perfect, and I thought it very funny that Peter would not pray for a meal until he knew what was being served!
Sandy Walterman
Facing the Giants by the kendrick brothers had an amazing impact on me for so long I needed to watch it again and again when coach goes into the woods with his bible and just pours out his heart to the Lord is just amazing
terri Taylor
I love the wings of poppy Pendleton and already pre-ordered the lost story of via belle

The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe is a fav from childhood.
Denise
I loved The Witch, The Lion & The Wardrobe. I have watched the entire series. I read a couple of the Little House books & have watched the entire series of Little House on the Prairie. I love Westerns & Western Romances because I love that time period. My local State Fair Agriculture Museum has a log cabin that was built by a cousin ancestor of mine. For a few years I would dress in 1800 Pioneer dress & "live" in it a few hours a day during the State Fair. I have the paperwork on it's history & how it was built. I would so be able to live in that era.
Michele Rolfe
Many of the ones mentioned by others impacted me as well but the one that came to mind was Screwtape Letters that we did as a Sunday school study. It got me started reading more of his books.

I read the Striker's Bride series back in the 90s during college finals. I still think of the message of those books 30 years later. One of the few allegorical style books I have liked.

Abigail Mitchell
I've been impacted by Frank Perretti, in His darkness trilogy, and C.S. Lewis in Mere Christianity

I also loved GLH once I discovered her books, but the novel that impacted me the most was The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe by CS Lewis. It was the first chapter book I read and my dad enjoyed reading it to me. I’ve also read it aloud several times. It’s possible that that book is the reason that I’m drawn to books in series.
Terri
The Chronicles of Narnia
Diana Hardt
I think Gone With the Wind probably had the biggest impact on me, as it was a big night, my Granny was with us, and we went to a fancy theater in Ft. Worth, TX yo view it! I have my Dad’s copy of In His Steps, which I read after he read it. Our pastor had given a copy of it to his Deacons, of which, my Dad was one. When our youngest grandson got saved and we drove out to Virginia Beach to see him get baptized in the Atlantic Ocean, we bought him a copy of In His Steps.
Lana Burton
So many novels have had a profound impact on me. Many are ones already mentioned here (the big ones, like Pilgrim's Progress, Anne of Green Gables, the Little House books, etc.) , but three I didn't see mentioned here were the works of Robin Jones Gunn (specifically the Glennbrooke series, which the Lord used in my life in a big way as a young adult), Brenda Coulter's books (which were very meaningful for me as a newly married woman) and Ruth Logan Herne's novels which gave me a taste of home as a military wife living far from home. They all were very impactful and meaningful at certain points in my life.
Laurel
This Present Darkness - Frank Peretti gave me insight into spiritual warfare.
Caryl Kane
Eli by Bill Myers had a profound impact on me in that it brought the story of Christ to my 20th century western perspective and therefore shed all new light on familiar Bible stories
Erin L.
Not My Will by Francena Arnold left a huge impression on me as a teenager.
Melissa Smith
The Cross and The Switchblade by David Wilkerson; both the book and the movie. From 1972-1974 I had the privilege to work for Teen Challenge in Southern California and witnessed first-hand the provision of God for this ministry.
Tammy H
I also read In His Steps, also Christy as well as Julia by Kathrine Marshall. As for movies, I love old B&W movies such as The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, Mrs. Miniver, A Portrait of Dorian Gray and so many more.

Facing the Giants.
Janet
The movie, A Man Called Peter, written by his wife, Catherine Marshall (who is also the author of Christy), and books Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers, The Riven by Jerry Jenkins, and The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis all significantly impacted me at different phases of my Christian journey.

Julia Stone

Christy Colley
As a young teacher, the novel Christie greatly impacted me. I began to see my teaching career as a ministry.

What about Bob- a movie my counselor recommended in which the patient becomes sane and the psychiatrist goes insane.
Mary
The Screwtape Letters. I felt called out so many times.
Abigail
I have the same book list you mention above. I have read the Peretti books several times (including his children's series) and many by Catherine Marshall. I read and also used to own almost all of the Grace Livingstone Hill books. Many books by new authors have made an impact, too.
Jan Stetson
This isn't a Christian novel, but Crystal Singer by Anne McCaffrey left an impression on me, because of the musical elements. She wrote so vividly that I could hear the crystals come to life as I listened to the book.
Ann Harrison
Lord of the Rings! Absolutely love it!!! Both books and movies. Tolkien is definitely one of the most skilled authors of all time, and Peter Jackson did a great job of adapting it into a movie.
Miley Cali.
The Chosen series
Karen
Your new book sounds exciting! Janette Oke's books got me started on Christian fiction over 40 years ago. But even before that, Not My Will by Francena Arnold made a major impact on me. As far as classics go, Les Miserables by Victor Hugo, A Tale of Two Cities by Dickens, Little Women by Louisa May Alcott, are all books that affected me deeply. I've only read Miserables once because it was 1440+ pages, but I have read the other two classics several times.
Barbara Harper
My favorite Redeeming Love has a strong impact and I share it with everyone. I haven't seen the movie for fear of being disappointed. lol
Dianna
The Chronicles of Narnia and The Lord of the Rings were series that profoundly influenced my love of reading and love of longer books/novels. I find it interesting that you also enjoy Grace Livingston Hill! She’s one of my favorite romance authors (& her books seem like historical fiction, though it’s just because she wrote so long ago!).
Linda Hoover
I started reading Christian fiction quite awhile ago. It started when I read a Janette Oke and I was hooked. It was nice to be able to read a great story without a lot of other "stuff" to bog me down.
Julie Macy

I’d love to read both of these books and share them with a friend!
Trisha
The Margo Mysteries by Jerry B. Jenkins These books were the first Christian fiction I had ever seen/read. They were written by Jerry B. Jenkins in the very early 1980’s. I could really relate to these, and they were the only Christian fiction I saw for years. In those days, finding these books were harder than finding hen’s teeth. Christian bookstores were rare and there was no Amazon. But these books were worth the search. They made a huge impact on me, more so than the Left Behind Series Jerry B. Jenkins is known for.
Becky Isaac
My favorite books are the same as Wendy A, and the Bible! :)
Tami le Roux
I loved reading and watching the movie of Gone with the Wind, perhaps because I spent my early years primarily in Texas and Oklahoma, and Grandma was a dyed in the wool Southerner.
Lillian Lane
Other than the Bible, I find it hard to credit just one book. So many books have impacted me during different seasons of my life.
Mandi
Band of Sisters by Lauren Willig. It was the book that got me interested in historical fiction again.
Rick Molitor
I’m a work in progress. I’d say the Bible but, I’m still working on that one, and I’ve a long way to go. While there are many books that have had an impact on me the second one that came to mind was Redeemed by Francine Rivers. Thank you!
Janet Day

Patti
Substitute guest by Grace Livingston Hill started me on reading christian fiction books.

I appreciate many of the books mentioned. My early favorites were the Little House Books, Charlotte's Web, and Anne of Green Gables, also Narnia, especially L, W and W. Also All Creatures Great and Small by James Herriot and Jannette Oke's books especially when I was a young adult.
Cynthia Hammell
Books that have left the biggest impact on me are not novels, so I hope it's okay to mention them instead. :) Steps to Christ, The Desire of Ages, and The Great Controversy, all by Ellen G. White, are among the most powerful books ever written, I think.
Wendy A

Trying to decide which novel or movie left an impact on me is difficult. There are so many gifted authors that write with passion, grace and share Jesus with their readers.
Deana
A chance to die the life and legacy of Amy Carmichael was such a powerful read. It showed me examples of how to love like Jesus.
Nesha Patton
I think the movie would be "It's a Wonderful Life" - I have seen it many times but I still tear up at the end when the bell on the Christmas Tree rings and Zuzu says: teacher says, every time a bell rings and angel gets his wings. The book would be To Killing a Mocking Bird.
Patti Whitaker
I am not sure what the book was called but I read a book about Helen Keller when I was in middle school that really made an impact on me.
Denise Turner
Novel right now, is by an Indie author, Melissa J Sweet, and it is Hey Jude, and it's about a woman who is in a bad relationship and someone rescues her from that relationship. it's just a reminder that we need to be there for our friends.
Michelle McElrath
The Zion Covenant and The Zion Chronicles series that I read back in High School. I’ve been a huge Historical Fiction reader ever since.
Rachel Hilliker
"The Flame and the Flower" by Kathleen E. Woodiwiss, was my first romance book I read, which turned me into a romance reader for the rest of my life.
Audrey Stewart
So many books! I'd say the biographies of missionaries and martyrs had a big impact on me, especially Corrie Ten Boom and Elizabeth Elliot. In His Steps. ScrewTape Letters, and more recently My Dear Hemlock. many more that I can't think of titles.
Ruth
So many wonderful stories have impacted me at different times....Cherry Ames led me to a career in Nursing. I have read many WW II novels lately and one of my favorites is The Rose Code by Kate Quinn. And I would highly recommend The Shell Collector books by Nancy Naigle they brought a very peaceful escape during a difficult family time
Jeanne Dembenski
The novel(s) that left an impact on me are the historical fiction books I've read about the packhorse librarians in Kentucky in 1935-1943. I have read all the books I can find and am waiting for the latest "Book Woman of Troublesome Creek" book by Kim Michele Richardson. I am so impressed by the young women who risked their lives and safety to get books and magazines to people.
Susan Fletcher
In high school our youth group small group read through an A. W. Tozer book (The Pursuit of God). I remember the theology really challenging me to dig deeper into scripture and into what I knew about God.

Jennifer Greer
To Kill a Mockingbird.
Cleda Cox
As others have said, so many choices! I am enjoying the recommendations. I loved collecting antique books, and I have a couple of old-fashioned Grace Livingston Hill hardcover books in my collection. One of my favorites of hers is Crimson Roses – so romantic! Elizabeth Elliott also recommended Stepping Heavenward by Elizabeth Prentiss, which I enjoyed; also Hinds’ Feet on High Places by Hannah Hurnard.
Rebecca Hunt
Books that I read when I was younger that left a deep impact on my life and my own writing include, “Enemy Brothers” by Constance Savery, “The Horse and His Boy” by C.S.Lewis, “The Hawk of May” by Gillian Bradshaw, “Tale of Tow Cities” by Charles Dickens, and “The Thief” by Megan Whalen Turner. I highly recommend all these books as they show experiments in living a life with character, love, and sacrifice through fictional settings that allows the stories to permeate the reader and carried by narrative and adventure to linger long after.

Hunger Games 3 book series
Jasmine Gatti
While not a novel the book "Into the Whirlwind" by Eugenia Ginzberg https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/71149.Journey_into_the_Whirlwind left a profound impact on me. I read it over 30 years ago while in college, and the her story stays to me to this day. It is the story of her life during Stalin's regime, and of how she became imprisoned by the government on trumped up charges against her (some by her friends and neighbors) During this time of unrest it became some what of a "witch hunt" of betrayal, with people "turning in" people to advance themselves in the party. Her descriptions of her treatment in the prisons and the camps she was sent to ( along with studying in about the German concentration camps) appalled me and opened my eyes to how fast things can go so wrong and how cruel mankind can be. I believe it should be required reading in all high school or college history courses.
Laura Willyard
The Dean's Watch by Elizabeth Goudge was a good story, and it's been a while since I read it, so I don't remember many details, but it stands out to me because it had the profound impact on me of when I finished the book, I would describe what I was feeling as "satisfied," and just sat there in silence for several minutes. I can't remember any other book having that effect, even though there are a number of other books I would say were my "favorites."
TJ
Our church had a showing of A Thief in the Night. During a break, many of us kids went out to the parking lot to burn off some energy and were scared spit-less to see that the moon was red. We were convinced the rapture would happen any day. I had dreams and nightmares for years. I was a spiritually sensitive teenager. I loved reading biographies of missionaries and Christians. The Hiding Place and anything by Corrie ten Boom shaped my heart in a way that is difficult to describe.
Melissa C
Jesus Freaks by DC Talk and Voice of the Martrys had a PROFOUND impact on my life. God called me to the mission field from a very young age, and I did not know what that meant. Jesus gave it all in obedience and love. Would I give it all in obedience and love? This has stayed with me since I read it, and then I was also struck by End of the Spear. I saw the movie first and then read the book, and WOW! Never the same.
Yadira Uhlig
A lot of author's books too many to name. I love gothic, suspense and history.
Sharon Jennings
Eve’s Daughters by Lynn Austin
Victoria
The Hiding Place by Corie Tenboom
Carla Toppass
One book that has had a profound impact on my life is “Evidence Not Seen: A Woman's Miraculous Faith in the Jungles of World War II” by Darlene Deibler Rose. It is the true story of a young American missionary woman's courage and triumph of faith in the jungles of New Guinea and her four years in a notorious Japanese prison camp. Never to see her husband again, she was forced to sign a confession to a crime she did not commit and face the executioner's sword, only to be miraculously spared. I read it annually for many years because it is so inspirational and challenges me to live what I believe.
Lisa Hudson
The Chronicles of Narnia had a huge impact on me as a child that has lasted into adulthood.
Judith Martinez
Elisabeth Elliot’s Through Gates of Splendor had a profound effect on me.
Gail Hollingsworth

Elisabeth Elliot’s story, Through Gates of Splendor had a profound effect on me.
Gail Hollingsworth
There have been so many! It's hard to pick just one!! In His Steps is actually in the top 5 or 10! Other books would have to be Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers, When the Day Comes by Gabrielle Meyer, and One Tuesday Morning by Karen Kingsbury
Hope
Hi there, I too was impacted by some of the same authors you mention above. A Voice In the Wilderness by Grace Livingstone Hill was an early favorite of mine as I pondered the courage needed to trust God’s plan despite harrowing circumstances. I discovered Catherine Marshall’s Christy in my grandmother’s small library and was captivated by the heroine’s determination to serve the people so different from her own experience. Thank you for writing books that inspire and point to the Author and Finisher of our faith, hope and love.
Karolyn
Too many to name! One of my earliest memories is of sitting in my mama’s lap in an orange vinyl rocking chair with her reading stories from the Childcraft books. We had family devotions every night so I grew up hearing the Bible from newborn up. God Bless.
Ladonna Jordan
While not a novel, Hinds Feet On High Places is an allegory about Much Afraid and her journey which is a picture of our Christian walk.

Staci B.

So many too count because I love to read and I love what others create or hearing about real life people of the past: Battle Cry by Leon Uris, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, 1984 by George Orwell especially because it is so applicable to our times today. It was required reading when I was in High School and you had to get signed permission from your parents (think of that). I graduated 1970. Thanks for your gift of writing and thanks for opportunity to win your book
Susan Grondin
I would like to be entered in this book giveaway!
Bridgette Shippy
Any novels about WWII especially those written by Sarah Sundin or Amanda Barritt. Well researched and makes me want to tell everyone to read them so that we never forget what those people sacrificed for freedom of others. I think that appreciation is lost on much of today’s generation. Same with Revolutionary War books.
Paula Shreckhise
Redeeming Love, by Francine Rivers!
Jen
I think one of the books that really impacted my life as a young lady was Christy by Catherine Marshall. I used to read it while my 12 month old napped in the afternoon. That same little baby girl is 45 years old now. That's how long ago that was. I'll never forgot that book and I've been looking for great Christian fiction ever since. I always look forward to these scavenger hunts. They are so much fun.
Polly
